Mývatn

With images of the volcanic lake Mývatn (engl: `lake of midges´) which forms the northern extension of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, separating the Eurasian from the North-American plate. Due to its large population of midges in summer, the lake is a gathering ground for about a dozen of European and arctic duck species. The gallery also shows images of the surrounding volcanoes and nearby vents and fumaroles at Hverarönd as well as the geothermal bath Jarðböð.

Northern Fjords and Coast

With images of the Northern Fjords and coast between Blönduòs and Akureyri including images from the midnight sun at the Arctic circle near Akureyri and the famous Goðafoss waterfall where according to legend Þorgeir, after adopting Christianity around 1000 a.D., tossed the last idols of their former Nordic religion into the water.

Plants and Animals
