Athens (Modern Greek: Αθήνα, Athina, Ancient Greek: Ἀθῆναι, Athēnai) is the capital of Greece and is considered one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state, a centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum. It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.

Crete (Greek: Κρήτη, Kriti or occasionally Krētē) is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea at 8,336 km². It was the center of the Minoan civilization (circa 2700–1420 BCE), the first advanced civilization in Europe. Crete forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece; while it retains its own local cultural traits (such as its own music and dialect).
